The 2017 Formula DRIFT pro championship is decided. Oh, we know there’s still one round left on the calendar, and Fredric Aasbo – 2015 champ and driver of the Rockstar Energy Corolla iM – is mathematically still breathing, even though at this point he’s a distant 96 points behind leader James Deane in the Worthouse Drift Team S15, and not very likely to catch him. It’s that last part we can’t reconcile, and anyone who wants to believe there’s still a chance for Deane to falter and Aasbo to somehow make a miracle happen – well, we hate to break it to you, but there’s no denying fate.

It looked a tad bit more possible going into Round 7 of 8, set on a section of the infield road course at Texas Motor Speedway; then, Deane was only 57 markers out of reach, and with a lucky break (heck, Aasbo even had a chance to eliminate Deane!) this story might be different. But as he has in the last two rounds—Montreal and Seattle—Deane qualified number one, and again looked unbeatable.

In a first for Formula Drift, this year’s Pro series is an eight round affair. My seventh set of photos are normally captured at ‘The House of Drift’, also known as Irwindale Speedway, but that’s not the case for 2016.

The championship race has pretty much come down to three drivers: Fredric Aasbø, Vaughn Gittin Jr., and Chris Forsberg, and with the grand finale now just around the corner, there are only a few battles left to decide the overall winner.

Matt Field is a young driver with a dedication like no other, and in Texas he took his very well deserved first win.

It warms our hearts every time Formula DRIFT shuts down the haters. The latest vindication comes from Round 7 at Texas Motor Speedway, the penultimate event of the 2016 season, where the tandem action was so evenly spread, competitors so equally matched, cars so ridiculously close to one another, we wouldn’t blame you if you were watching and literally on the edge of your seat for the entire contest. Ok, so yeah, it’s still a drag race – FD cars are powerful and fast, we get it – but with the judges encouraging chase drivers to take the gloves off and be aggressive, we saw a lot of wheelmen take the urging to heart and put the noses of their cars right up in other guys’ business.
